Take a journey to see one of the American Red Cross disaster preparedness programs in Haiti following the January 12 earthquake. Red Cross volunteers are training 65 residents in Tapis Rouge camp, home to about 14000 people in the neighborhood of Croix Deprez, about how to be prepared ahead of hurricane season. They are learning first aid – how to care for wounds, treat burns and how to carry injured people on stretchers – and how to warn residents during or ahead of disasters using bull horns, whistles and flags. This is all part of the American Red Cross disaster risk reduction program to train and empower residents to know what to do in case of an emergency in some of the most vulnerable camps in and around Port-au-Prince. Currently, Red Cross volunteers are training residents in 9 camps and hope to expand to more than 25 by the end of June.
