Nokia N900 Smartphone – Dining Room Table Reviews
Review of the Nokia N900 smartphone from my dining room table. READ THE PRODUCT ADVISORY! Music by Kevin MacLeod, incompetech.com . “Operation IVY” and “The Last Man on Earth” available at http . *** PRODUCT ADVISORY *** Before ordering the phone, check out this Engadget article at www.engadget.com . Apparently, the MicroUSB connector is a surface-mount component that’s held in place only by its solder joints. Reports are coming in that the connector is breaking off. I haven’t had any issues with the connector, but you do need to be very gentle with it. The plug must be slid into the connector at the proper angle otherwise it’ll jam up. And if you force it, it’s not impossible for the connector to break especially if it’s not properly secured inside the phone. The same could be said for the headphone jack. UPDATE: The problem has been confirmed by a reliable source from an independent phone retailer. He’s had clients come back to him complaining of this particular problem. Nokia is now spreading the word to its support staff concerning this issue. Any phone experiencing this problem will be repaired for free during the phone’s warranty period. No word on a recall yet, but it might become necessary if this problem escalates just like the pedal and brake problems involving Toyota vehicles. Stay tuned for further news. *** LATEST UPDATES *** Firefox Mobile now available. Definitely worth a look. firefox.com A switch for the phone’s radio is available. Install “Cellular Modem …

Read the show notes on the issue with the phone’s microUSB connector as published on Engadget. Let us know if you have any problems with the connector.
I already expected the connectors on the phone to be held only by their solder joints, so I’ve always been extra careful with them and haven’t has any problems whatsoever up to now.

The flash video’s look terrible. and when i long press on a flash component on a web site(particularly flash video) i am given the option to low quality medium and high quality. It seems to be set at medium quality. so all the video’s i watch are really grainy. i had a N810 for the longest and the flash video’s worked much better and the quality was better aswell.

i went to the about flash page on adobe’s website and it said i was using flash player 9. My nokia N810 had flash 9.4. and the N900 is advertised as having flash 9.4. i am updated to the latest firmware.
whats going on? how do flash vidoe’s perform for you? and do you know of a remedy? thanks (please respond)

Oh ya about the Micro Usb connector. its crooked. and its seems like it is not mounted correctly. only had my N900 for 2 days so i’ll let you know if a problem arises.

Same issues here.
There’s a wave of updates scheduled for March. Chances are the flash will be upgraded as well. But don’t expect any significant improvements. Flash is a CPU hog, and the N900′s 600 MHz ARM processor can only do so much. It’s no wonder Apple didn’t want to support flash on their iPad.

aww damn i just got this phone, and very disappointed to find out that it doesnt have mms
TheCanadianPublic on February 17, 2010 at 3:31 am
There’s a third-party app currently in development that will try to include MMS support in the N900, but it isn’t finished yet, and there no guarantee it’ll actually work.

Best N900 video I have found on YT so far. I had the N900 for about two weeks but it was too much of a geek phone for me.
I still recommend it though to the Linux geeks of the world. Despite its bulky size and USB connector issues, I liked the rest of the hardware’s solid design and feel. RF on the phone is great too.

thinkinb about gettin a n900 soonish, but i can’t decide wether its the n900 of the htc hd2… any thoughts? nice review by the way 1 of the best i seen!! 5*

Unless you’re an Über Geek, it’ll pretty much come down to the available apps. The N900′s app collection is still very slim while the Android’s app count is growing fast.
Both of them however simply can’t compete against the iPhone’s app count, which is now well over a hundred thousand. But that can be a problem when you’re looking for a simple tool, and the search returns you a few hundred potential candidates.

lol. yeah. i have a ipod touch, n im not a big fan of the iphone 2 b honest its to gimicky, plus they’re holding back with what they could do. adobe wanna give them flash, but apples just sayin no. but anyway. think i’ll go 4 n900. as it is pretty SWEET. ples didn’t think the hd2 was android?! as its windows 6.5 no? thanks anyway
TheCanadianPublic on February 24, 2010 at 10:23 pm
Whoops! My mistake! The HD2 IS Windows Mobile! I’ve been so caught up with HTC making Droid phones now that I forgot to check.
What’s the app selection like on a Windows Mobile phone?

Brilliant review, TheCanadianPublic, especially due to the incredible clarity on the video, so many reviews don’t put so much effort in as you have in capturing the phone in well focused and well lit conditions. Not only informative, but it was entertaining too, I am going to keep an eye out for more of your reviews! Thank you!

very useful but the phone is a brick, man. if you dont mind the weight and size, its an excellent phone (of course, personal choices in software, company, etc. will vary).

hey are there any canadian wireless companies that support this phone’s 3g networking?
TheCanadianPublic on June 4, 2010 at 5:47 am
Wind Mobile, although one individual couldn’t get it working on their phone from one of Wind Mobile’s own stores!
I haven’t had a chance to try it myself. I prefer to use the Wi-Fi. It’s much cheaper.
