I’m really confused by your hair loss question you answered. First do you really believe heavy exercise promotes hair loss, and if so how does this happen? When you talked about your weight training it didn’t seem like you figured in your program based on losing your hair.

Yes, I don’t just “believe” it, it’s a scientifically-proven biological fact that stress (cortisol) and an increase in testosterone can and will cause hair loss in many men, and even women in some cases. I recommend watching my Hair Loss & Growth video from October 25th.
My current program is based around two things: muscle gain and not losing my hair. ;D So the goal is to get your work outs in, but not overdo it so that you risk hair loss or baldness.

Thanks for the clarification. I had not seen your earlier video so I wan’t able to follow what you were saying.

Not a problem. Let me know if you have any other questions, I’m happy to answer them.

Hey dude, I’ve watched a bunch of your vids and they are awesome, i’m just curious, I’m 17 6ft 4 and 170lbs and super skinny. I eat like a horse but i can’t gain weight but your excersizes have helped alot. I was just wondering, at my age is it possible for me to get buffer or is it just one of those things that will come with age. Like am I too young to work out and gain alot of muscle mass.

Great tips. The best two things that helped me to be totally rid of a long-standing lower back problem are:
* Drinking more water
* Eating low fat raw vegan food for almost all of my diet.
These two things helped me more than any exercise ever did. Exercise is now a pleasure and my back is no longer weak.
The worst thing for my back was sitting down or standing in one place all day. Even this is no longer a problem due to the diet and increased water consumption.

Thanks Matt that really cleared things up with me.
I look forward to your next video.

Hey Garrett,
If you haven’t seen my Muscle Gain video yet, that might help you out.
You will be able to gain muscle right now, and you’ll be able to lift heavier than most 17 year olds because you don’t have to worry about stunting your growth. You have the ideal formula already: you get to sit in class all day and rest your body, and you can eat throughout the day (NOT school snacks – bring your own from home), which is ideal for putting muscle mass on a skinny frame.

I hate to differ from matt but i feel opposed slightly to the back comment. each muscle has an antagonizing muscle that does the opposite movement. exp. the bicep has the tricep, chest and upper back. I feel when you train the abs without attention to the lower and midback you cause the back to be constantly strained from the stronger ab muscles pulling foward and the weaker back muscles unable to equally pull back. I am not very good at explaining this in a typed message.
cliffbrowning84 on November 26, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Put simply in any body building competition, sport, or even the image of the greek ideal perfect body. one should have symmetry and balance. each opposing muscle should work together evenly to not cause strain on the other. exp. the shoulders should never slouch forward or be pulled back. when they are pulled forward it is because the chest is stronger then the back. when pulled back the chest is weaker then the back. one would want the shoulders to look perfectly aligned in the middle

of the body, maybe slightly back. so for the back i would recommend to go easy on the ab exercises, doesnt mean dont work them out, and to incorporate more lower to midlower back exercises. careful when starting out because the lower back can become very sore and tight for days when not used to exercising it and will almost immobilize you untill you have recovered. SO DO MORE LOWER BACK EXERCISES AND START OUT VERY VERY EASY ON THE EXERCISE UNTILL YOU FIND A GOOD STARTING POINT

Hey Cliff,
While I do appreciate the comment, that is not good advice to give to someone with an injury. Yes, symmetry is important, but the woman who asked this question has mid-back pain (this was mentioned in the video).
As a certified personal trainer AND someone who has first-hand experience with hundreds of injuries, I can tell you that in this situation, your best course of action is to focus on the abs to assist the back and even do yoga to gently strengthen and stretch the back.
RealRawMatt on November 26, 2009 at 9:34 pm
You could also think of it like this…Say you tear your bicep muscle — it’s probably not a good idea to start doing bicep curls. Back pain is often a muscle injury or strain (unless, of course, you have sustained a spinal injury, which is a completely different story), so you would not want to work this area until you can strengthen the areas around it first (in this case, the abdominal muscles).
Hope that clarified a bit.
Take care,
Matt

i really still have no idea the reason for the pain which is very relevent. I just went based on most people either being inactive or those that do workout usually dont focus on the lower back. I know normal american lifestyle of busy busy with no focus on health usually causes some back pain. that is what i was basing it on. in the case you made i would say you are correct
